What are we doing here on Earth? More than 10 years ago, We turned our back to city life and decided to come back to our land in Uthaitani. We brought with us a belief that we can live on this land without harming, taking advantage of, or using things that do not belong to us —either from other people or from nature. We started small on our little farm.
During the first 3 years, we got hit with many hard questions, from our family members who did not understand what we were trying to achieve. We grew crops that nobody grew. We used neither fertilizers, pesticides nor herbicides.
We thought about how we can live without money. We later realized that money is still a necessity. During the first few years, our farm didn’t earn us enough income. So we had to take a route, different from what we first intended. We took on odd jobs to earn enough money.
Having a kid of our own was also very new to both of us. Taking care of her was not an easy job. For us, life is fine, however, it is. We can experiment with different things however we want.
But it’s different with our little one. We still didn’t trust it enough. We did not dare to experiment the same things on her. Every day, we had to make new assumptions and explanations, trying to understand what’s going on.
We asked the same question over and over: Is this exactly what we wanted? What are we doing here? Should we return to city life where jobs with lots of money are waiting for us?
But we both believe that what we are doing is the kind of life that we have chosen. We had to truly return to our true, initial intention. We cut off all the freelance jobs, although they gave us a higher return. And came back to working on our small farm.
We experimented with this belief that “we can really live with this” again. In the fourth year, our world started to open wide. We started to get more acceptance from the outside world. The income from the farm was able to finally support us. In the fifth year, our world became more balanced.
We started to reach out to more people. And now, ten plus years later, we are still on this route: “Small people doing things that they love” Same as many other millions of people out there
who are in different corners of the world following what they believe and living a life that does not involve taking advantage of other people or nature. It’s not an easy journey, but that is what we do.
